چکیده

This review will examine the effects of advanced physiological aging on gastrointestinal (GI) neuromuscular anatomy and function. We will emphasize contributions from the past several years, and build-upon the excellent reviews of Camilleri et al. and Bitar and Patil. We will not include references to early developmental changes in the enteric nervous system (ENS). We will begin with a review of our current understanding of the effects of advanced age in the human GI tract and use these observations as a foundation to examine potentially relevant mechanisms underlying physiological aging. Using data from animal models, we have included references to mechanistically driven studies that focus on extraintestinal sites where we consider that these observations have relevance to physiological aging involving GI neuromuscular function. Changes in the composition and function of the gut microbiota in celiac disease

Evidence is supported the hypothesis that any changes in the composition and function of the gut microbiota play a fundamental role in a number of chronic inflammatory diseases including celiac disease (CD). In the last decade, several culture-independent methods have been developed to identify the components of the human microbiome. The study of microbiota based on nucleic acid analysis found ...

Aging and neural control of the GI tract. II. Neural control of the aging gut: can an old dog learn new tricks?

There has been a dramatic increase in funding available for aging research, primarily due to the fact that answers to questions on aging are likely to have a major impact on the well-being and healthy aging of the world's population for decades to come. The incidence of certain gastrointestinal problems, such as dysphagia and constipation, increases dramatically with age. Changes in gastrointes...

Emerging tools to study enteric neuromuscular function.

Investigating enteric neuromuscular function poses specific challenges that are not encountered in other systems. The gut has a complex cellular composition, and methods to study diverse multicellular interactions during physiological gut functions have been limited. However, new technologies are emerging in optics, genetics, and bioengineering that greatly expand the capabilities to study inte...

The role of Tachykinins in health and disease

Background & Aim: Tachykinin peptide family is one of the largest peptide families in animals that has been first discovered in the gastrointestinal tract about 70 years ago and isolated for the first time from the small intestine and brain. Up to now, more than 40 tachykinins have been extracted from invertebrates (insects, worms and fungi) and vertebrates (skin, gastro-intestinal duct, centra...
